Since furloughs for California public employees began in 2008, workers have seen their total revenue continue to decline, the Sacramento Bee reports. According to the paper, total income among public workers has fallen by $1.2 billion since 2008. That is an important turnaround for the state's budget, but is frustrating to the thousands of workers.
In 2010 alone, state worker pay slipped $426 million as the state continued to roll out furloughs to those employed at utilities, local schools and other public programs - though University of California employees have been spared. Meanwhile, the overall state employment rate has dipped 2 percent since 2008.
The results of furloughs and lost jobs has made life difficult for thousands of workers who have had no say while watching their paychecks get smaller.
"It's still pretty tough," Luis Neves, an office assistant with the state Department of Corrections, told the Bee. "I have one of the least-paying jobs, so I have to juggle the bills."
State agencies have also taken a hit. The Bee reports that the Department of Developmental Services saw 9 percent of its
payroll evaporate, translating to $35 million. Governor Jerry Brown says he wants to cut another $750 million from a program that helps those with developmental disorders.
