Employee attendance, hour tracking and pay are components of a business that managers and owners need to be aware of.
A specific focus in the new year for businesses should be on hour and wage payment laws, according to Mark J. Neuberger of legal services firm Foley & Lardner, LLP.
Calling compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act the biggest risk to human resource departments, Neuberger said the associated costs and commonness of litigation over FLSA suits means employers need to address any compliance issues by making sure they understand the various nuances of the act.
One place employers can begin their review of the FLSA is the U.S. Department of Labor's website dedicated to compliance assistance. Reading through the act does take a lot of time, but the website helps businesses focus on specific issues that apply to their employment practices. Nearly as important as the FLSA are state employment laws, which may supersede federal requirements for the minimum wage, breaks and meals and other components of employment.
An important second step after increasing comprehension of the law is the acquisition of employee management software that can aid in maintaining compliance.
