Eighteen child-protection investigators will be given back pay for overtime accrued for time and attendance at the Hillsborough sheriff's department. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the sheriff's department has announced it will pay $136,032 to 18 of the 24 investigators who brought a class-action lawsuit against the department in 2011. The remaining six plaintiffs have shot down the offer and are instead continuing in their pursuit to win more money from the sheriff's department.
As a result of a 2011 Department of Labor investigation, the sheriff's office was found to have violated the federal wage rights of 65 of its 85 its department investigators. The DOL determined the employees should receive a total of $402,049. They reached this number by averaging the four missed overtime hourly payments per employee per week for each of the 65 investigators.
When employees heard the results of the 2011 DOL report, criticism was raised across the department, as the investigators handle cases involving the sexual and physical abuse of children across the county, making them indispensable to the state.
The individual settlement payments for the 18 investigators who won the suit range from $716 to $19,999. The average payment per employee is $7,557.
