Florida city's unions consider budget-balancing payroll cuts

The Cape Coral, Florida, firefighters union recently proposed payroll cuts of $1.2 million to reduce the city's $4 million budget shortfall - $600,000 less than the city's original request, WZVN-TV reports.

Specifically, the proposal comprised holiday pay reductions, changes to vacation time, an increase in employee pension contributions and a 7.6 percent pay cut, according to The News-Press.

"I'm heartened by that on one hand, but it's not the number that we are looking for," said John Hament, attorney for the city, as quoted by WZVN.

Ahead of the October 1 deadline, the city's police union offered more than $807,000 in concessions, The News-Press reports. Under the proposal, police officers' pension contributions would be raised by 3 percent, and a furlough plan based on years of service would be introduced.

"I'm very encouraged to see police hold out this negotiated olive branch," said councilman Kevin McGrail, as quoted by the news source.

The city budget is set to be approved at an upcoming public hearing. The last hearing, held earlier this month, degenerated into arguments, the Cape Coral Daily Breeze notes.
