A volunteer fire department treasurer for the town of East Haven, Vermont, recently turned herself in to local police after an independent audit uncovered an alleged embezzlement scheme.
The audit was conducted after the fire department's executive board members noticed general fund account irregularities. It was later determined that approximately $11,000 was missing.
According to the Burlington Free Press, Mildred Higgins had served as treasurer for a decade and been a member of the department for more than 20 years. She was found to have filed false financial records for printing in the town's annual report, and recently resigned from her position, Vermont Public Radio reports.
After turning herself in to police, Higgins was released pending an arraignment on embezzlement and false-claim charges.
The Grand Isle Fire Department in New Orleans also came under fire for its record-keeping recently, according to the Times-Picayune. A payroll analysis found that its fire chief was paid more than $20,000 in overtime, despite a lack of documentation that he was entitled to it.
