Federal agencies may want to focus on employee retention

Now is an especially important time for federal agencies to increase their employee retention efforts and internal employee recruiting, especially with a two-year pay freeze for all federal employees forthcoming, the Federal News reports.

The recommendation comes after a report from Booz Allen and the Partnership for Public Service that offered guidelines for agencies in their efforts to hang onto employees. The study, titled Keeping Talent: Strategies for Retaining Valued Federal Employees, examined what conditions cause employees to remain in a position, while breaking down practices used by human resources departments and supervisors.

"Retention of newly hired, top-notch employees means that recruiting and hiring investments are paying off and new skills and energy are flowing into the workplace," the study found. "Retention of high quality, mid-level and senior-level employees means an agency is benefiting from the judgment and experience of seasoned professionals."

The United States Census Bureau indicates there are more than 3.8 million federal employees, with a total payroll of more than $17 billion in 2009. In late November, President Barack Obama proposed a two-year freeze of the federal payroll.
