Employee tracking records reveal high sick leave rates in Illinois county

Public workers in Cook County, Illinois, have an abnormally high rate of sick leave compared to state and local government workers across the nation, according to the Chicago News Cooperative.

Employee tracking records for fiscal year 2011, which ended on November 30, revealed that the average Cook County worker took 6.64 hours of paid sick leave per month. The statistic is nearly double a figure from the 2010 Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics that put the national average at 3.6 hours over the same time period.

The discrepancy may be due to the fact that Cook County workers have an increased propensity for getting sick. However, it could also be caused by employees taking advantage of the system. A spokeswoman for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said the county's human resources department is currently using its HR information software to isolate and track instances of abuse.

Interfacing human resource software with a payroll processing system can help organizations manage employee data more effectively, expediting the results of investigations and freeing up HR workers to attend to other tasks.
