In an attempt to keep the city's budget under control and prevent fraud, Detroit mayor Dave Bing has announced an
payroll verification audit. The Detroit Finance Department will verify that people who come to pick up checks are actually one of the city's 11,000 employees. Audits will occur on February 24, 27 and March 3.
At various sites across the city, the Finance Department will require employees to bring a state issued ID card or a passport when they pick up their paychecks.
Cheryl Johnson, finance director of city's department, says that she doesn't expect to find anything unusual with the audit.
"There are a lot of scams that have gone over for a long period of time where I think we’ve not done a good enough job from an administration standpoint," Mayor Bing told CBS Detroit
Detroit's budget deficit is expected to be at $200 million, which could cause shortages in the city's cash flow, according to CBS. Last month, Bing proposed a plan that would last through the 2013 fiscal year, calling for the city to save $258 million, the source reports.
