Over the next month, the Department of Labor will be investigating restaurants in northeast Georgia to ensure they are in compliance with time and attendance laws.
According to department officials, restaurants will be chosen randomly. Employee attendance policies will be checked for Fair Labor Standards Act compliance and
timeclock records and related paperwork will be examined.
"We just want to make sure that they are all in compliance with the minimum wage laws, overtime requirements and the other aspects of the FLSA that we enforce," said Alfredo Villoch, a community outreach specialist with the department, as quoted by the Athens Banner-Herald.
Last month, a similar investigation exposed widespread noncompliance with FLSA provisions at Huddle House locations in Georgia, Missouri and West Virginia. Some of the restaurant chain's employees were not paid time-and-a-half for each hour worked that exceeded 40 hours in one week, and others received less than minimum wage. The chain subsequently agreed to pay more than $60,000 in back wages to 128 workers.
