Part of the task of running a responsible and organized business or agency is keeping
payroll records clear and up-to-date - a lesson the Cleveland Fire Department learned the hard way.
Recently, information came to light that a Cleveland city law director was informed of illegal shift-swapping occurring inside the city's fire department nearly two years ago, yet he refrained from taking any action, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Stewart Hasting, the chief assistant law director, received an email from a Cleveland fire captain in 2010 detailing the shift dealing that was happening, including pay other firefighters to take their shifts while still receiving salaries and benefits.
"The mayor said he believes Hastings' inaction was the result of irresponsibility and poor decision-making, rather than an unethical connection to firefighters involved in illegal shift-trading," the paper writes.
Companies and organizations can take steps to avoid such situations through implementing new payroll policies and technology.
