After a six-year run in Las Vegas, this year's Miss America pageant, was held in Atlantic City, N.J., and the event cost the city nearly $400,000 in overtime. As a result of such high expenditures, it remains unclear whether the event will constitute an overall financial gain for the city as local businesses had initially hoped.
The majority of the overtime pay went to police who put in about 3,000 hours of overtime while monitoring the parade from a command center nearby. The police earned overtime pay at an average rate of about $78 per hour. Firefighters and public works employees also accounted for significant portions of the total overtime accumulation.
At the moment, it is unclear whether the city will be reimbursed for that money. According to the Press of Atlantic City, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno has emphasized several times that no state money would be used to aid the city with pageant costs. In an interview with the news source, Business Administrator Ron Cash said, "we're hoping and expecting to get some kind of reimbursement."
In situations in which city workers are likely to log a significant number of hours in excess of a normal work day, it is important to maintain careful records of employee time. Time and attendance software can help supervisors keep track of hours and review requests for overtime.
