The city of Augusta, Georgia, is considering human resource outsourcing as a way to save money, according to the Augusta Chronicle.
City commissioners are preparing to vote on the proposal, which would help solve some of Augusta's budget problems. The city already outsourced
benefits administration last year, but its human resources department still exists to handle responsibilities such as
employee payroll services. There are currently 11 HR employees remaining as of December, according to department records obtained by the media outlet.
According to city administrator Fred Russell, the move would eliminate most city HR jobs in a year when the commission is looking to cut at least 34 jobs and reduce the city's budget by more than $5 million.
"I'm ready to recommend that we try (outsourcing)," he said, as quoted by the news source.
HR outsourcing would provide the benefits an internal team can give without the expenses and challenges associated with in-house services, freeing up city employees to attend to other tasks or eliminating positions altogether.
