The city of Nitro, West Virginia, endured a significant
payroll glitch when officials accidentally overdrew the city's payroll account earlier this week, the Charleston Gazette reports. According to the paper, the issue stemmed from a payroll processing mistake that caused money to transfer from the account that pays employees into accounts receivable, rather than the other direction.
That mistake led to bounced paychecks for a number of city employees during the last pay period in January, raising fears that the city was underfunded. Nitro Mayor Rusty Casto was quick to dispel any such rumors. In fact, Casto admitted he was affected by the mishap.
"They just punched the numbers in wrong, from what I can tell," Casto told the Gazette. "If you cashed your check on Tuesday, it probably bounced. In fact, I was one of the ones to have theirs bounce. That's how I caught it."
In all, Casto said that 17 paychecks had bounced as a result of the error, but the oversight was corrected and employees will have access to money. Currently, city officials are working with Huntington Bank to nullify overdraft charges stemming from the bad checks, the Gazette reports.
