Noodle manufacturer and distributor Rama Food Manufacture Corp. have been ordered to pay workers for violations to federal time and attendance regulations. The company is a national distributor of rice-based noodles for retailers and restaurants. The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division investigated the noodle manufacturer and found the company knowingly denied employees overtime pay and failed to maintain an accurate record keeping system as mandated by California.
Instead of paying workers one and a half times their regular pay rate for overtime work, Rama paid their employees a flat rate, according to the Daily Journal, a southern California newspaper. As a result, the company has been ordered to compensate 36 current and former employees with more than $195,000, as well as nearly $14,000 in liquidated damages.
When low-wage workers are not properly compensated for services rendered, they can be severely limited in their ability to meet personal financial obligations, said Assistant Director of the Wage and Hour Division's West Covina District Office Eric Williams. The noodle producer was fined more heavily due to the fact that it was aware of the regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and knowingly violated them.
