Bronx Internal Affairs detective racks up more than $71,000 in overtime

Last fiscal year, an Internal Affairs Bureau detective earned more than $71,000 in overtime employee attendance by spearheading an investigation into ticket-fixing within the Bronx, New York, police department, according to the New York Daily News.

Randy Katakofsky dedicated more than 1,000 overtime hours to the probe, expected to lead to indictments against 17 members of the NYPD. He took home a total of $168,016.40, second only to Franklin Garcia of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, who accrued more than $88,000 in overtime, making his total earnings $183,662.

Last year, the NYPD paid out more than $544.5 million in overtime to its members - including police officers, traffic enforcement agents and crossing guards - according to department records.

Bronx-based Jacobi Medical Center also recently came under fire after four members of its janitorial staff were found to have accrued more than $80,000 each in overtime, according to a separate article by the news source. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg attributed the high time and attendance payouts on a reduced number of workers.
