Bookkeeper charged for stealing nearly $456,000 from Oklahoma business

The former bookkeeper for Norman, Oklahoma-based Quality Plumbing and Heating was recently sentenced to 30 months' imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release on the charges of embezzling from her employer and laundering money, according to the Norman Transcript.

Amy Joyce Cameron is accused of misappropriating more than $455,000 from the company over the course of nearly three years, which the court ordered her to pay back. She stole the money by abusing her access to the company's accounts payable, accounts receivable and billing accounts in order to issue herself unauthorized payroll checks, which she then deposited into personal accounts, the news source reports.

According to The Associated Press, Cameron began stealing the money to support a drug habit. She is thought to have been able to get away with the embezzlement for so long - between March 2007 and February 2010 - because of the fact that she had unfettered access to the company's accounts, and the business did not have a system of checks and balances in place to ensure that its finances were in order.
