The Major League Baseball association is making sure that all clubs are aware of the Fair Labor Standards Act after the San Francisco Giants violated minimum wage, overtime and record keeping laws, according to Oakland, Calif. Fox affiliate KTVU. Back in May 2013, the Giants were ordered to pay $700,000 to employ for these violating time and attendance laws, and, as of August 2013, the club had paid $544,715 in back pay.
After an investigation from the Department of Labor, the Giants were ordered to give back pay to 74 employees for improper payments actions over the past three years. Both major and minor league workers were affected, including assistants and managers. Many employees were found to be working overtime for a flat fee during the day, even though they were at work much more than they were getting paid for. The club was misclassifying overtime workers and keeping incorrect payments records.
Organizations looking to keep track of their employees records and pay workers proper wages can make sure to invest in the right technology to help them do so. Time and attendance software can ensure no companies violate FLSA rules and face fines.
