Arizona Attorney General to pay officers for overtime patrol

The Arizona Attorney General's Office recently announced that it will provide officers from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office overtime pay to patrol Colorado City. Attorney General Tom Horne set aside $420,000 as remuneration for the extra hours, which will be spent policing a polygamist enclave in Colorado City where sect leader Warren Jeffs used to live.

Officers and other first responders, such as firefighters and paramedics are guaranteed overtime pay (time-and-a-half their regular wage) for any hours they work more than 40 in a single week. As a result, departments often face strained budgets from officers who abuse payroll policies regarding overtime pay.

"This grant will serve as a bridge until next year, when hopefully the legislation will pass," said Horne, regarding a proposed law that would give Mohave County officers jurisdiction in the area.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office can stretch the budget throughout the year if they plan carefully and use a timekeeping system that will closely monitor officer's work time. Some systems will notify department supervisors when an employee is nearing the limit for overtime pay, so they can make necessary scheduling changes.
