Are your employees' eyes wandering?

A recent poll by Right Management revealed that 64 percent of respondents were approached either directly or indirectly about a possible job opportunity in the past 12 months. Monika Morrow, the company's senior vice president of career management, told HR.BLR.com that social media may be a factor in this statistic, since it opens up more routes for employee recruiting.

With so many people being approached by outside companies, employers might want to spend some time solidifying their retention practices. As the EEOC says on their website, "employee retention starts with the application process." Here are some tips for improving employee retention:

  1. Regularly review your recruitment practices. Are you reaching and attracting the widest and most qualified applicant pool possible? Hiring skilled, knowledgeable managers will create a more effective, and hopefully positive, workplace.
  2. Look to improve or increase advancement opportunities and provide employees with the support and opportunity to reach their maximum potential. When a worker knows that there are places to advance and a true opportunity to do so, the workplace will become a place for a career rather than just a job.
  3. Ask employees how they're feeling. Opinion surveys and management evaluations can point out areas for improvement so changes can be made to prevent turnover.
